Keep Going 10 Ways to Stay Creative in Good Times and Bad edition by Austin Kleon Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

  • While I am a longtime Austin Kleon fan, and this book more than delivers on the promise of STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST and SHOW YOUR WORK, it's something else as well. Beyond the brilliant and practical advice for maintaining creativity, it's a guide for keeping your focus and staying centered in a world that seems increasingly out of balance. It arrives not a moment too soon.
  • Austin Kleon's "Keep Going" is filled with wisdom and plain good advice. From great quotes, to blackout poetry, to drawings, every new page has some great little treat waiting for you to discover. I look forward to re-reading this book, especially during those times when progress seems out of reach, when it seems as though there is no way forward. Then I will take this book down off of the shelf, remember to forgive myself, take a walk, and keep going.
  • Here is a handy compilation of quotes, anecdotes and guidance condensed from the author's experience, observation and research. The aim is to spur the creative individual on to perseverance and sustainability in their practice.
Approximately half of the book consists of full page illustrations (mostly in the form of blackout poetry) as well as quotes (in call out boxes and interspersed liberally throughout the writing). One might consider this a drawback; however, the actual words-to-read are fairly succinct and are rarely wasted.
Here you will find a fine blend of realistic and optimistic; practical and ideal. Surely some parts felt cliché but I strongly suspect that if I were to reread this book in 3 months or next year or whenever (which I bet I will!) those formerly cliché bits will present as profound. I can ignore platitudes whilst mining for gems.
By the way- there is certainly a Creative Pep Talk Podcast vibe to this joint- a fair amount of philosophy as well as some great book recommendations. Its simply not as- peppy. And that’s ok.
    Yes, I do recommend it.
Golly, you might even buy two of them and use the verso/recto pages as wallpaper to surround yourself with good advice, ideals and encouragement.
  • I wasn't a fan of the author's other works. They seemed written for excessively fast, headed for burnout, 20-somethings and I just couldn't connect with the message. With this book, the author takes a different approach - slowing down to keep going. If you appreciate disconnecting from the digital world to reconnect with the physical world, then this might be a good book for you. It is a short read and is heavy on graphics (as per the author's style), but that just makes it easy to read over and over again.
  • I love this author, I’ve read his two other books “how to steal like an artist” and “show your work” and absolutely loved them so I got this. I’m about halfway through and again I’m in love.

Everytging he writes is relatable as an artist and I truly feel this is a must have for all artist. Each page holds so much wisdom. I’m feeling motivated to create art! Thank you Austin Kleon!
  • Like Austin's other books, Steal Like an Artist and Show Your Work, Keep Going is not a long book at a little over 200 pages, but it has mass as far as its content. As the title suggests, there are 10 umbrellas under which a wealth of GOOD, PRACTICAL advice, based on lived-experiences and assimilated from so many wise and wonderful people who are named and quoted within the book. These are not platitudes but pragmatic ways to spark and nurture your creative spirit. I love what he says about "doing the verb" (#3) and the lovely link between clutter and creativity (#8.) Beg, borrow, or steal this book and be infused with Austin's wise and wonderful vibe. Austin also has a newsletter and Word Press blog that I follow to keep my creativity batteries charged.
  • This book ranks in my top books. I was hopeful this book would be all that it said it was...and it was so much more.

I love how he goes into detail on each point. He doesn't just gloss over it. He pours his heart and soul into it. You can tell that he has LIVED this stuff, not just spouting off research. As an artist, I find his advice so timely and so important for my sanity! I'm so thankful for his words. This will stay in my studio and I will reference it often.

It's an easy read with so much meat. Read it slow and let it soak in.

I have been a long time fan of Austin Kleon. I love his newsletters, books, and instagram feed. He is thought-provoking and his recommendations are always amazing. He LIVES this stuff. If we could all put into practice what he talks about in this book, I think we would see a lot of kindness and joy in the world.

Thank you for writing this, for sharing this. It is a gift.
  • I got this book because I thought it would be motivating... and athough it doesn't disappoint, what surprised and delighted me was how beautiful the writing is and also Kleon's thoughts on other topics such as "Art Monsters", how to stay open minded and why.. as he puts it "the first step to transforming your life into art is to pay more attention to it."
There were many pearls of wisdom in this book-- be sure to get the hard copy as you'll want to underline it and place it on your bookshelf
