Arguably the most influential, imaginative, and provocative designer of his generation, Alexander McQueen both challenged and expanded fashion conventions to express ideas about race, class, sexuality, religion, and the environment.

Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty examines the full breadth of the designer’s career, from the start of his fledgling label to the triumphs of his own world-renowned London house. It features his most iconic and radical designs, revealing how McQueen adapted and combined the fundamentals of Savile Row tailoring, the specialized techniques of haute couture, and technological innovation to achieve his distinctive aesthetic. It also focuses on the highly sophisticated narrative structures underpinning his collections and extravagant runway presentations, with their echoes of avant-garde installation and performance art.

Published to coincide with an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art organized by The Costume Institute, this stunning book includes a preface by Andrew Bolton; an introduction by Susannah Frankel; an interview by Tim Blanks with Sarah Burton, creative director of the house of Alexander McQueen; illuminating quotes from the designer himself; provocative and captivating new photography by renowned photographer Sølve Sundsbø; and a lenticular cover by Gary James McQueen.

Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty celebrates the astounding creativity and originality of a designer who relentlessly questioned and confronted the requisites of fashion.

"I love Alexander McQueen, and I have an immense amount of respect for him and for his work. His death was a tragedy, but his creativity will never be lost (in part due to this book). This book is amazing. The photos are gorgeous and cover an amazing amount of his work, and seeing his evolution through the years is really interesting. The reference in that back is also great, because it allows you to understand what collections you like and what pieces are favorites, etc. I also would like to point out that this book is great in part because it was not built around the expectation that you saw the exhibit, but it instead just built to be a tribute to McQueen in general. Amazing product at an amazing price!"

  • I've been obsessed with owning this book since I saw the exhibit in 2011-- one of my deepest regrets was not buying it right then. Was so happy to see it offered here! It was delivered more quickly than expected and in good shape-- the top corner of the front cover was a little squished (book was shipped in a large box with a DVD and sort of bounced around a bit) but otherwise I am very happy with the purchase overall.

The material itself is beyond wonderful. I am reading the introduction to McQueen's career, which is well-written and provides some great insight into the designer's inspirations and influences. The clothes themselves are masterfully crafted, stunning and intricate, a true feast for the eyes. This book makes me feel like I own a McQueen which is nice because in reality I could hardly afford such riches.

The photos are masterfully edited-- what at first blush looks like a scuff or a ding on a mannequin is actually the figure of a woman 'showing through' the white, painted skin which brings a new level of interest to each page. I've flipped through the photos and quotes, and although there are a few layouts that aren't great (pp170-1 for one should not have been a two page spread or the bodice of the dress should have been canted off to the side a bit) the experience of opening this magical volume and flipping through the pages is just that-- magical. Even if you missed the exhibit, if you appreciate fashion as art this book is worth purchasing.
  • Really high quality binding, heavy pages, the lenticular cover is eye-catching (but will collect dust, a soft toothbrush can get it out.) Excellent photography, Solve Sundsbo did very well. The garments really feel alive on the page. An excellent look back at Mr. McQueen's oeuvre, before Sarah Burton took the label in a different direction.
  • This book was incredible. If you love fashion, creativity, a look into someone’s mind and what makes them think - this is the coffee table book for you! Fascinating images of McQueens stunning designs will have you turning the pages and thirsting for more.
  • I love Alexander McQueen, and I have an immense amount of respect for him and for his work. His death was a tragedy, but his creativity will never be lost (in part due to this book). This book is amazing. The photos are gorgeous and cover an amazing amount of his work, and seeing his evolution through the years is really interesting. • If you are interested in McQueen revolutionary work this book is for you. A very important part of his work is depicted here. I also recommend "Champagne Supernova" that describes something about McQueen life. The world needs more people like McQueen as well as David Bowie and other art genius...
  • No one remembers anymore how McQuinn was dragged through the mud by certain fashion media for that certain first collection for that certain fashion house...
This book gives full credit to his genius - a rare one amongst many mediocre celebrity-designers who are still around to bore us with their same-old-boring collections season in and season out.
Great photography reflects what I feel is the McQuinn world of fashion.
If you are even remotely interested in fashion, add this book to your collection!
  • I can't help but feel sadness when I look through this book, because like some great fires, McQueen burned too brightly and went fast. His creations are absolute genius. It's incredibly sad to see one so talented die too young, yet I'm so very glad that he was able to share his talent with us. While I might never see these beautiful works in person (I really hope to), I can look at some of his masterpieces in this book and reflect on his awesome ability to transform people through costume.

One has to be a HUGE personality wearing some of his creations (Gaga), or the clothes most assuredly wear THEM.

Daughter is scared of the skeleton on the front cover and doesn't want to look at it. Otherwise, I'd have this on our coffee table in plain sight.
  • The book is definitely made well in quality but the photographs are lacking. I saw page after page of black blazers, along with designs on other pages that were not his most loved creations and all of my favorite designs from several seasons were only added as tiny cubed photos on one page. I was very disappointed. However there were quotes of Alexander McQueen's statements on almost every other page which made the book much more enjoyable for me. I loved getting to read his ideas and opinions. He was such a beautiful creative genius. I will miss his talent, perspective and brilliance.
